So many wonderful moments from this session…

1. Arriving at their home to discover they have a pier on a lake in the backyard. (yes!)
2. The reflection of light on Allison’s face from her husband’s white shirt. (yes!)
3. Her husband’s willingness to set up a hammock specifically for these pictures. (yes!)
4. The tulips and daffodils that bloomed just in time to be picked. (yes!)
5. The way they doted on each other. Simply too sweet.

celebrating maternity

What is not to love about this third-time mom who came into the studio to document and celebrate her pregnancy? Despite battling a chest infection all week, she was completely game for fun lighting set-ups. Her view was, “Go for it. That’s what this morning is for.”

Each maternity session is bittersweet — I have very few images of myself pregnant — you can count them on one hand. And they are definitely not pretty. How much I would cherish just one beautifully lit, peaceful portrait. It is so rewarding to create these for other moms.

Can’t wait to meet her new baby in just a few weeks and capture the whole family together!

Beautiful Josee is expecting twins soon. Can’t wait to meet them in a few weeks…. Yay!

And I love that she asked her mother to join her in some of the portraits. We do not cherish our mothers enough!

James

I don’t know what it is about the prairie this year, but it’s addictive. The particular patch I use is completely undisturbed. Scientists come from all over the world to study it’s native species.

It was delightful to meet James and his parents in this magical place, especially because James’s mom is in that wonderful glowy phase of pregnancy (for twins!). Unfortunately, James’s dad had just broken his hand *ouch!* a few days before our shoot, so he was a less able to wrangle little James than normal. I’ll tell you one thing that wasn’t broken though — his voice.

Both James’s mother and father are classically trained opera singers. Have you ever heard Italian opera at full tilt on the wide open prairie? Whoa.

p.s. No, of course we did not take the dogs into the prairie. They stayed out on the sidewalk that borders the road for their shots.

Nicholas : 2 weeks

What an honor. A privilege. A goosebump kind of thing.

Watching a beautiful expectant couple, with all their hopes and aspirations wrapped in mystery, transform into adoring, attentive parents over the span of a few days.

Truly, it was delightful to create both maternity and newborn portraits with this family. As the new, glowing dad in these pictures said to me during our first session, “My wife makes your job easy, doesn’t she.” And I, with my degree in English completely failing me, responded, “Well, yeah.”

Nicholas’s Grandma made a special trip from Central America for his arrival and I was so pleased to capture some images of her as well. I know from my own experience how irreplaceable this special help is. Thank you for welcoming me into your home and heartfelt congratulations on your safe arrival, Nicholas!

Congratulations to this beautiful mom, who is expecting her fourth baby this fall. (How do some people look SO good when they are pregnant!?) It is a wonderful stage of life to document — the anticipation of a new little one into a growing family. As a mother, I know it is also empowering to see maternity images of yourself. Moms are often behind the camera taking snaps of their kids and don’t have a chance to be in any shots themselves. I encourage all my parents to get into the action during a session, not just maternity sessions, if only to capture a few frames. Looking forward to meeting the new baby soon!

Rosie (-1 week!)

Beautiful Rosie just managed to get her maternity session scheduled before her due date. Whew! The goal was to capture some of the light, natural beauty in her pregnancy.

Little background: The “heart fingers on the belly” shot that you often see in maternity photos is special in this case because of her ring. I learned that the ring was made by fusing her mother’s and father’s wedding rings together after they passed. I think this is a lovely tribute and cool way of incorporating this generation into her life.

Can’t wait to meet your little guy when he arrives!

Spring light

I hope that everyone has a great spring break! The kids and I are off to sunny North Carolina to visit family. I’ll also be taking advantage of the warmth, and doing a few shoots while we’re out there. Here’s a quick diptych (Fancy Nancy way of saying two pictures stuck together) to get you in the mood for the summer light that is just around the corner. Yay!

There is also some VERY exciting news brewing. Look for an announcement next week!!!
